How To: White Eyeshadow

White eyeshadow is so pretty and clean, makes your eyes look bigger and makes you look more awake instantaneously.

It is also one of the infamous makeup looks that screams “MIDDLE SCHOOL” when done wrong, right up there with black eyeliner and frosty lipstick. All of which can be rocked with the right tweaks. Here are my tips to look more posh then frosh (ha ha ha.. get it?)

1) Use Primer. I don’t care what brand, use SOMETHING to prevent creasing, crumbling, and general nastiness.

2) Stick to the lashline and inner corner. Using a shimmery white shadow here is what really makes the eye-enhancing qualities of white shadow come to life.

3) Try a cream formula. For easy gliding over the lashline and preciseness, I really like pen formulas, such as this one by ELF.

4) And then go over it with a powder. This helps prevent creasing, and also gives the look staying power. Use an angled eyeliner brush or even a q-tip to really push the shadow into the lashline and/or inner corner

5) Use mascara to give your eyes definition. Since white eyeshadow is a pretty soft look, using mascara helps give your eyes subtle, soft definition. Maybe not as much as Kim K., but a healthy coating should do the trick.

The Cosmo Voxbox

I got the honor of being sent the 2012 Cosmo Voxbox last week 😀

If you’ve never heard of Influenster , I suggest you go look at their website! It’s really cool, and you might get the chance to try new stuff like I did.

DSCF0408

This is a peek inside of what I got, and some mini-reviews.

A Venus Razor with a Venus + Olay cartridge (not pictured – but was in the yellow bag). It’s kind of hard for me to be unbiased on this one, because shaving can become a pretty dire situation. I’ve been loyal to Gilette’s Venus since I first ever started shaving, but with the price of razors only going up (and me being a broke college kid), I’ve been pretty stuck to the basic razor. I love the Venus + Olay cartridge, I definitely will purchase more of those. I find it makes shaving easier and I haven’t had my usual horrible razor burn on my underarms.

Sample Size of Bath and Body Work’s Forever Red.  Described on B&BW’s website as “our most luxurious fragrance ever”, it just was not my kind of scent. It was a little too… fruity or something. I’m not really good at determining what a perfume smells like, so forgive me, but I prefer the “clean” scents and this does not fall under that category. Don’t get me wrong, it smells good, but it just isn’t the type of perfume that I like to wear. I also try not to get too attached to Bath and Body Works’ perfume, since I fell in love with Breathe Romance back in sixth grade and then they discontinued it 😦

Ghiradelli Gourmet Sea Salt Escape Chocolate Bar. Um, YUM! This milk chocolate bar is loaded with almonds and a kiss of sea salt, so it hits on that salty-crunchy-sweet taste/texture explosion that I love SO much. This bar is really, really good.

Pilot Frixion Pens in Black and Red. These are nice. I like how smoothly they write, and the fact that they are ERASABLE! Whaaaaaaat?! It’s perfect for a student like me, because I’m a weirdo but I can’t stand taking notes in pencil, yet I make a mess of my notes with all my scribbling-out mistakes. This is perfect. I seriously love them.

Makeup Story

How old were you when you started wearing makeup?
I started wearing mascara and eyeliner in 7th grade, so probably around 12 or 13.

2. How did you get into makeup?
I always loved art and crafty stuff as a kid. My mom has the most amazing vanity with a drawer just full of makeup. I don’t remember exactly how old I was when I started playing with it, but I remember when I would be home sick or just on the weekends, she would let me just play with it. I’d come up with obscene look using eight lipsticks, wash it all off, and then do it again – for hours.

3. What are some of your favorite brands?
I love MAC, Maybelline, Sephora brand, Clinique, and ELF; among many, many others!

4. What does makeup mean to you?
I think it’s just something to boost self-esteem and confidence. But at times makeup definitely feels like an art form. It’s also a pretty good way to bond with people – by enhancing what other people have, and making them feel more attractive, you can create a good relationship. Also, it’s just fun!

5. If you could only wear 4 products on your face what would they be?
Maybelline Fit Me foundation, any mascara, MAC naked lunch eyeshadow, and Tarte Emphaseyes Gel liner. That’s pretty much my routine anyway!

6. What is your favorite thing about makeup?
Its so versatile: you can go from a very natural look, to a very ‘done’ look in a matter of minutes and products.

7. What do you think about drugstore makeup vs high end makeup?
There’s good in each one! I love both, though I do see a benefit in splurging on things that I use often, and won’t have to get rid of quickly, like eyeshadow, gel liner, and brushes. The drugstore always has gems though. I always get foundation, mascara, and more trendy colors there.

8. What is one tip of advice you can give to a beginner?
Get yourself a good brush set, and practice! Figure out what looks best, and don’t be afraid to play around until you find looks and colors you like.

9. What is one makeup trend you never understood?
Lipliner that is significantly darker than your lips/lipcolor. Why does one want to look like they have a dirty ring around their mouth?

10. What do you think about the beauty community on YouTube?
There are some really talented people on there! I can waste hours and hours watching their videos. It’s a great place to get inspirations, get reviews before you purchase something, and find looks to wear!

Jazz Up Your Brush Collection!

Hey guys! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been mega stressed with finals this week. Crafting always makes me feel better. Back home I have a giant craft arsenal, but with limited space here at school I had to improvise!

I decided to take some old, cheap makeup brushes and give them new life. They are from Eyes Lips Face, I’ve accumulated them over the years from Target, and they are $1 each, plus tax; or you can buy them online here.

Using my neon pink Sinful Colors nail polish (color 920), I painted the white body of the brush using 2 coats.

The final result:

I’m interested to see how the paint holds up! I was thinking that this would be a fun idea for a gift for a  friend who is just getting into makeup  since an entire set is only $12 (I don’t have the whole set). Additionally, this would be perfect for a pre-teen birthday party! Instead of gift bags, buy each girl a brush set, buy some cheap, fast-dry nail polish, and paper towels! They would be cute with little designs on them too, if you’re especially nimble!

Happy crafting! Hope you will enjoy this new DIY section I’ve added!

What’s Your Best Skin Care Secret?

Hey guys,

Question for ya – what is your best secret for keeping your skin clear?

Mine would have to be regular exercise. I notice that after I don’t get at least an hour of cardio a week, my skin starts to deteriorate. For some reason, sweating it out seems to beat my skin woes. I think it is probably due to the sweating cleaning my pores out, but also because of the stress release that exercise gives me.

Another one of mine is regular exfoliation. I exfoliate once a day, or sometimes every other day, and that has always been a quick way for me to get my skin cleared up fast. I recently starting using Burt’s Bee’s Citrus Scrub, and I love it. I used to use one by Clean and Clear, and that worked really well for me, but I decided to try seeing if going all natural would make more of a difference.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Let me know what your secrets are in the comments!

Best Face Masques

Hiya partners 🙂 Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I want to talk about face masques today. I love those things. I’ve been using Queen Helen’s Mint Julep Masque for years now (10? yikes). I find there’s nothing better to deep clean my pores and draw breakouts up to the surface. (Gross I know.. sorry!)

Since I’ve moved to college, I haven’t used one yet, and it’s LONG overdue. I can’t wait to get home and use it, especially since my face has not been looking so hot in the last few days thanks to stress over finals. My skin is by no means “problem” skin, but since I’ve changed my location from a humid climate to an extremely dry one, I’ve noticed a huge difference. At home, I’d get the occasional whitehead and blackheads on my nose. Here, I get those big, painful, under-the-skin cysts that make putting makeup on a challenge. It doesn’t really make sense, considering I drink, I don’t know, five 24oz water bottles per day to stay hydrated here, but I think it has something to do with the lotion I put on my face to keep it from feeling tight.

I have yet to find a good hydrating masque that will also clean the gunk out of my pores. Any suggestions? I’m desperate.

Also – has anyone tried the whole gelatin-milk pore-strip thing? I’ve been reading a lot about it on various blogs and it sounds like something I should do when I get home, but I also have fairly sensitive skin and don’t want to completely freak it out.

What is it about Hot Pink Nails?

Maybe I just never got through my Barbie phase, but I love me some hot pink nails. I don’t know what it is about them, it could be the brightest, most neon shade of pink, and I think it’s sexy.

I think it’s because there’s a pink for everyone. A subdued hot pink says “I’m ladylike but fun”, whereas a neon shade screams, “look at me! check out this hot chick!” to all the shades in between.

And they’ve been seen on tons of celebs lately.

Two of my favorite shades are: Sinful Color’s “Soulmate”, a creamy, grey-pink, and Sinful Color’s “920”, a neon, matte pink. Yes, I’m a drugstore nail polish junkie, and I’m not afraid to admit it!

Hot pink nails: yay or nay?
